The wind was blustery, the rain fell hard and steady. Most folks enjoyed the lazy Saturday afternoon watching television or reading by the fire. Soup simmered on my kitchen stove as my husband settled in the recliner to watch the football game. I gathered my things and waited for my girlfriend to arrive. Today was the yearly quilt show in town from the local quilters guild and we were spending the afternoon together. My girlfriend Robyn arrived, and we decided to drive the short distance instead of walking since the rain poured down.
If anyone doubts quilting is not an artist expression, they have never been to a quilt show. Every color of fabric is put together with different designs to form a pleasing and unique pattern. Some are bold, some are subtle. Some have a theme, some are from scraps of quilts put together in a pleasing pattern and donated to a local charity.
We walked in wonder with gloves on to touch the quilts and look at the different patterns. The purple quilts drew me in like a moth to light. I could simply swim in the colors! I lingered over the quilts with a sailors theme and contemplating making a quilt for my son who loves the sea. The little boat look easy enough, although the mariners compass looked way beyond my skill level. How did she get all those points to match up?
Robyn and I admired and studied each quilt, made a craft, and watched a quilting demonstration. On the way out we stopped and chatted with a quilter sewing on a beautiful old sewing machine. We were reluctant to end our visit, so we stopped by the local coffee shop and shared conversation over a steaming cup of chi tea. We chatted about caring for our elderly mothers, we laughed at stories about the grand children, and listened to the feelings behind the words spoken. A simple quiet afternoon on a blustery Saturday. Art, quilts, friendship and tea…Lavish Simplicity!
