Quilting in the Rain

“Arts and crafts keep you sane”-Author Unknown

Wintertime is quilting season at my house.  The rain falls steady here most days, and it is too cold for me to drag myself outside to work in the garden. While the weather outside is dreary and gray,  inside my dining room the sewing machine hums as simple quilts emerge from brightly colored fabric. I had never made a flannel quilt, and this winter I decided to take the plunge and make all three grandchildren one with an owl theme.  I may not get the two little pink ones done till summertime though! This blue and green quilt is from the Disappearing Nine Patch pattern, which is just nine squares sewn together then cut and sewn back together to make a funky shaped block.  Out of the left over fabric, I made a little pillow case to match. (You can find an easy pillow case pattern here.) The quilt is a little bit larger than a baby quilt. It won’t cover a twin bed, but it is large enough to snuggle up with as he grows.

For those of you who visit often, I thought I’d show you a picture of Jaxon all decked out in his Seahawks outfit.  He really is the sweetest little baby. He is ten months old now, and had a rough start after he was born. It looks like he is going to be sent back to physical therapy as he is slower in his physical development. In the fall he went for physical therapy and responded well, so we are hopeful he will catch right up soon.  He is also being sent in for a referral for a little helmet he will have to wear for a month. His neck muscles were stiff after he was born, and he held his head to one side which affected the shape. I am sure he will be just a cutie even with a helmet on! How could I not spoil this sweet little one?

A friend and I went to a quilt show last week of quilts made and sewn by men.  I was amazed at the colors and the skills shown on these quilts.  Quilts are really a form of art in fabric and these were breathtaking.

Of all of them, this was my favorite. I could study the pattern and colors for hours. I would never have thought to put these colors together and yet they are lovely.  Look closely, can you see the face of Abraham Lincoln on the wall quilt? Simply amazing…

My quilt is very simple next to these works of art.  Even so, it will wrap our little grand-baby in soft blue love and be a treasure for him.

What do you do on cold winter days when you can’t get out?
